Joy’s of a charter skipper:
I was feeling very pleased with myself after my re-fit, and then on the second trip out “bang”! something was a miss, I lost my steering, 14 miles from home on an easterly wind “not that nice”, after closer inspection I found that the rudder was not their, we were in a 134 foot of water, with the help of one of the crew we managed to steer the boat using a bucket on a rope to get over a near by deep water mark, to fish the day out, until a colleague could tow us back to port. All things considered we did quite well compared to the catches on the other boats, with bull huss and congers. My thanks to Steve on “Crusader 2” for the tow home and Mick on Buccaneer for standing by. Anyway managed to get my boat lift again (£££££)! To check the full extent of the damaged, “no rudder a bent skegg and knackered bearing housing”. (Pic’s on gallery) I removed the skegg to get it straightened and re-welded, sent off the relevant bit to the engineering company (C&O) who were brilliant, a new rudder and bearing housing sent back on the Thursday morning, and I had a half hour window to get my boat lift back in between 14.00& 14.30 ready for a charter the next day. Oh well, managed it by the skin of my teeth, a quick anti fouling of the rudder and skegg and back in, Then a trial up Portsmouth harbour, all looking good. All the effort paid off because we had a fantastic day fishing the next day.
